  • Persistent vomiting or an inability to keep fluids down
  • Fainting, significant dizziness or signs of dehydration
  • Severe shoulder pain or sudden, severe one-sided pelvic pain

Call your fertility clinic when symptoms are worsening, aren’t resolving as expected or fall outside the recovery instructions you received.

For severe symptoms such as chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting or the heavy-bleeding threshold above, seek immediate medical care rather than waiting for a routine clinic response.

Some complications can develop after treatment has ended. OHSS, for example, can follow ovarian stimulation and may cause worsening abdominal swelling, nausea, pain and, in more serious cases, breathing problems or problems related to fluid shifts.

Why IVF Sometimes Fails Even When Everything Looked Promising

IVF can fail even when an embryo looked healthy and the transfer itself went as planned. There isn’t always one failure point: embryo genetics, uterine conditions, age-related factors and other reproductive issues can affect whether implantation leads to an ongoing pregnancy.
